/Description
Modelled in the matte, smooth surface of white bisque porcelain, this multi-figure group composes a tender scene in which a mother and her children gather in a moment of quiet grace. Carrying one of the beloved themes of Romantic-era sculpture, the composition reveals an accomplished hand in the flow of its drapery, the soft contours of the bodies, and the delicacy of the faces. Unglazed bisque lends a serene, marble-like presence; it absorbs light gently and brings the volume of the figures forward. The group rises on an oval base finished in cobalt and gilt, a contrast that heightens the purity of the white. Late-nineteenth-century European porcelain workshops produced such figural groups as sought-after pieces for salon vitrines and private collections. While its workshop and precise date are not documented, the style and craftsmanship point to this period. A quiet yet commanding piece, worthy of solitary display in a vitrine, it now takes its place within the gallery.
/Provenance
The workshop and exact date of manufacture are not documented; the bisque porcelain craftsmanship and style suggest the late-nineteenth-century European tradition. Acquired into the gallery inventory through a private collection.
